David Holwick<br \/>\n First Baptist Church<br \/>\n West Lafayette, Ohio<br \/>\n June 25, 1989<br \/>\n                                                             Acts 20:17-37<\/p>\n<p>                        A PASTOR&#8217;S DEPARTURE<\/p>\n<p>    I.  The Apostle Paul&#8217;s goodbye .<br \/>\n       A. Many have told me they hate goodbyes.<br \/>\n           1) I also hate goodbyes.<br \/>\n           2) (That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m wearing my black funeral suit.)<\/p>\n<p>       B. But if you have to do it, Paul gives a good way.<\/p>\n<p>   II.  The Spirit moves us to new situation  .                          20:22<br \/>\n       A. Potential in NJ unknown, but I feel it is God&#8217;s will.<br \/>\n           1) There will undoubtedly be obstacles.      20:23<br \/>\n               a) West Lafayette is hard to top.<br \/>\n           2) But ultimate task is following Spirit &#038; preaching gospel.<\/p>\n<p>  III.  Looking back at the past .<br \/>\n       A. Lifestyle.                                                20:18<br \/>\n           1) You know how I lived.<br \/>\n               a) Not always an asset.<br \/>\n               b) But we have opened our lives to you.<br \/>\n                   1> You have done the same.<br \/>\n           2) Difficulty of being a preacher.                       20:19<br \/>\n               a) Tears (I store it inside).                        20:19<br \/>\n               b) Tension:<br \/>\n                   1> Faithfulness to God.<br \/>\n                   2> Acceptance by people.<\/p>\n<p>       B. Preaching.                                                20:20<br \/>\n           1) Discuss sermon series and Bible studies.<br \/>\n               a) Sermon series:<br \/>\n                   1> John, Ephesians, Philippians, Sermon on Mount, James.<br \/>\n               b) Bible studies:<br \/>\n                   1> 1 &#038; 2 Samuel, prophecy, Holy Spirit.<br \/>\n           2) Tried to stick to Bible.                              20:21<br \/>\n               a) Repentance and faith in Jesus is content of gospel.<br \/>\n               b) Apply it to real life.<br \/>\n                   1> Effective?<br \/>\n                   2> Sometimes I have my doubts.<br \/>\n                   3> But many have said they&#8217;ve learned about Lord.<br \/>\n           3) House to house &#8211; Bible studies.                       20:20<br \/>\n               a) Lay leadership important.<br \/>\n               b) Inter-personal challenging, not just church services.<\/p>\n<p>       C. Focus of the preaching.<br \/>\n           1) Innocent of blood &#8211; the necessity of the gospel.      20:26<br \/>\n               a) Salvation proclaimed.<br \/>\n               b) Have you accepted Jesus?<br \/>\n           2) Whole gospel &#8211; the difficulty of the gospel.          20:27<br \/>\n               a) Hard aspects of obedience to gospel.<br \/>\n                   1> Amazed me how people were convicted by sermons.<br \/>\n               b) Some have turned away.<br \/>\n                   1> Whole gospel says it is never too late (till death).<br \/>\n                   2> Even those who have fallen away may come back.<\/p>\n<p>   IV.  Look to the future  .                                           20:28<br \/>\n       A. Church leaders (deacons).                                 20:28<br \/>\n           1) Be on guard.                                          20:28<br \/>\n               a) Don&#8217;t get a loser for a pastor.                   20:29<br \/>\n               b) Watch out for false doctrine.                     20:30<br \/>\n                   1> Much worldliness in our church.<br \/>\n                   2> Distortion of truth.                          20:30<br \/>\n                       A> Not just sin, but half-truths.<br \/>\n                       B> Easy believe-ism.<br \/>\n               c) Watch out for splits in body.                     20:30<br \/>\n                   1> Keep love and unity.<br \/>\n           2) Be shepherds.                                         20:28<br \/>\n               a) Great examples of shepherds in this church.<br \/>\n                   1> Bev Marshall.<br \/>\n                       A> Critical notes in margin of S.S. leader&#8217;s book.<br \/>\n                   2> Howard Brown.<br \/>\n                       A> Missing World Series (?) to come to church.<br \/>\n                            Game went into extra innings.<br \/>\n                       B> Kicking through snow banks with artificial legs<br \/>\n                            to come to prayer meeting.<br \/>\n                   3> Merrill Beal.<br \/>\n                       A> Push screaming and kicking into being SS teacher.<br \/>\n                       B> Image of Apostle Paul:  short, bald, bowlegged,<br \/>\n                            looks like angel, then fierce.<br \/>\n                   4> Grover Taylor.<br \/>\n                       A> Preacher&#8217;s voice, messages backed up by integrity<br \/>\n                            of life.<br \/>\n                   5> Glenna Hartsock.<br \/>\n                       A> Acting out raindrops of blessing as she teaches<br \/>\n                            young children.<br \/>\n               b) Shepherds must care for the sheep.<br \/>\n                   1> Love is mark of true church (Jesus).   John 13:34-35<br \/>\n                   2> This church has attracted many because of love.<br \/>\n               c) Only one shepherd is leaving.<\/p>\n<p>       B. Life is a race for all Christians.                        20:24<br \/>\n           1) We know where we are going.<br \/>\n           2) We have gone far already.<br \/>\n               a) Physical changes in church.<br \/>\n               b) New people since we have arrived.     (raise of hands)<br \/>\n                   1> Ron Gordon saved in Ruthie&#8217;s living room.<br \/>\n                   2> Julie Courtright, Carolyn Clough, Jeanne Swaney.<br \/>\n           3) We have far to go still.<\/p>\n<p>    V.  Commitment to God  .                                            20:32<br \/>\n       A. Only He can build up.                                     20:32<br \/>\n           1) He can be trusted to hold us till the end.         Phil 1:6<br \/>\n           2) He has an inheritance waiting for us.                 20:32<\/p>\n<p>       B. Give, rather than receive (Jesus).                        20:35<br \/>\n           1) Help the weak.<br \/>\n               a) Virgil Lutgen, Tom Daugherty, other shut-ins.<\/p>\n<p>   VI.  Tearful goodbye .<br \/>\n       A. Future Fellowship.<br \/>\n           1) Paul thought it was his last visit.                   20:25<br \/>\n               a) Wrong according to pastorals?         (2 Timothy 1:18)<br \/>\n           2) We intend to visit again.<br \/>\n               a) (Once things settle down.)<\/p>\n<p>       B. We are attached to this life, though heaven is real.<br \/>\n           1) Other dear Christians have already said their goodbyes.<br \/>\n               a) Mae Rice, Dan Brenneman, others who have died.<br \/>\n           2) Personal attachment:<br \/>\n               a) Grew up without sense of community.<br \/>\n               b) West Lafayette is only place I have lived where I was<br \/>\n                    made to feel I belonged.<br \/>\n               c) This church has treated me as family.<\/p>\n<p>       C.
