She, taken by surprise, answered at once, \u201cYes, sir, they do. They keep talking to me all the time, till I am sick of it.\u201d \u201cSo I thought,\u201d said Dr. Nettleton. \u201cLet\u2019s see — how old are you?\u201d \u201cEighteen, sir.\u201d \u201cGood health?\u201d \u201cYes, sir.\u201d \u201cThe fact is,\u201d said Dr. Nettleton, \u201creligion is a good thing in itself; but the idea of all the time troubling a young creature like you with it! I wonder how long it would do for you to wait.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s just what I\u2019ve been thinking myself,\u201d said Caroline. \u201cWell,\u201d said Dr. Nettleton, \u201csuppose you say till you are fifty?\u201d \u201cNo, that won\u2019t do — I attended the funeral the other day of a lady fifteen years younger than that.\u201d \u201cThirty — how will that do?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not so sure it would do to wait quite so long,\u201d said Caroline. \u201cNo, I do not think so either. Something might happen. See now, twenty-five, or even twenty, if we could be sure you would live so long? Or a year from now, how would that do?\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t know, sir.\u201d \u201cNeither do I. The fact is, my dear young lady, the more I think of it, I am afraid to have you put it off a moment longer. Besides, the Bible says, \u2018Now is the accepted time.\u2019 We must take this time. Had we not better kneel right down here, and ask God for mercy?\u201d<\/p>\n
The young lady, perfectly overcome by her feelings, kneeled on the spot. In a day or two, she was rejoicing in hope.<\/p>\n
