He was demanding, impatient, and oftentimes, downright rude.<\/p>\n<p>On one occasion, a servant was bold enough to stand up to the man, taking strong issue with Churchill\u2019s behavior.  Churchill, it is variously reported, responded saying, \u201cYou were very rude to me, you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d replied the servant, \u201cyou were very rude to me, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d said Churchill, \u201cbut I am a great man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While some suggest the comment was made, at least to some degree, tongue in cheek, others, like Churchill biographer William Manchester, suggest that it was serious and in keeping with his difficult temperament.<\/p>\n<p>Winston Churchill, prime minister of England both during WWII and again from 1951-55, was indeed a \u201cgreat\u201d man by any worldly standard.  He is rightly reputed to be one of the greatest wartime leaders of the modern era.  But \u201cgreatness\u201d does not necessarily translate into \u201cgoodness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany,\u201d said the great preacher Charles Spurgeon, \u201cwishing to be great have failed to be good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In God\u2019s Kingdom, greatness is not measured by accomplishment, but by character \u2014 character marked by humility, servanthood, and most importantly,  agape  love.<\/p>\n<p>No doubt, Churchill, though flawed by perfectionism and impatience, was at heart a deeply caring and compassionate man.  Nevertheless, accomplishment and position are no excuses for thinking oneself \u201cbetter\u201d than any other.<br \/>\n     \u201cSitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, \u2018Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all\u2019\u201d (Mark 9:35, cf.
