Yonder to the great Northwest, a young civil engineer went to construct a bridge across a mountain chasm and after weeks and months with his groups of helpers he had almost finished the bridge at the close of a certain day. He said to his men: \u201cCome back men, after supper, and we will finish it in about an hour and I will pay you a day\u2019s wages for the extra hour.\u201d \u201cNo,\u201d they said, \u201cwe have made other arrangements.\u201d He said, \u201cCome back and I will give you two day\u2019s wages.\u201d They said, \u201cNo; but why do you urge it?\u201d He said: \u201cIf a great storm should come down tonight on the mountains it would sweep this unfinished bridge away. We have not quite secured the bridge.\u201d But they went their way saying: \u201cIt won\u2019t rain in months.\u201d But the clouds were filled with rain that very night and emptied their floods upon the mountains, and the floods came down, resistless in their power, and swept the unfinished bridge utterly away.
