Victories Aren’t Won On Champagne

William Jennings Bryan was visiting Japan and attended a banquet given to the Japanese Admiral of the Navy. When it came time to pay the naval leader tribute by raising a toast, all raised their champagne glasses. There was a gasp of alarm as Bryan, a tee-totaller, raised a glass of water. Someone grasped his arm and whispered to do so would be considered an insult. Bryan responded by saying, “You won your victories on water,” he said, turning to the admiral, “and I drink to your health in water; whenever you win any victories on champagne I shall drink to your health in champagne.”
