The Role of Human Conscience

The role of human conscience in revealing to us God’s will and standards. Conscience is innate in all people, but the norms or standards vary from culture to culture.

A missionary to northern Brazil observed a very nervous and fidgety native with sweat on his brow enter the village and seem very uneasy even in the presence of his friends. Later, the missionary had learned that this fellow had just killed a man of another tribe. Although in this society it was not considered wrong to kill a member of another tribe, this man was obviously under the pressure of a guilty conscience. While societal norms do set the conscience, there is also the witness of God in the nature of our relations with other human beings that overrides the errant social standard.
