The Birth of Volleyball

A century ago, William Morgan faced a dilemma. A physical director at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, he had a class of older businessmen who needed exercise. Tennis and basketball were not quite right for them. After some thought, he divided his men into two teams, separated them with a tennis net raised to the top of two six-toot poles, inflated the lining of a basketball, and the sports world met volleyball.
