A minister was talking with a woman who is a Bible teacher. She has her own class each week. He mentioned capital punishment. “I’m against capital punishment,” she said. “I cannot imagine anyone claiming to be a man of God who believes in capital punishment. Why on earth would you believe in capital punishment?”
“Very simple reason,” he said. The ONLY society that God ever established on earth and ruled directly on earth … in that society, for the BENEFIT of that society, He established capital punishment. I can give you the verses.”
“I would be very happy to hear the verses,” she said. “But let me say I would first have to go to the Holy Spirit and see how He would lead ME on the subject.”
Do you realize what she was saying? No matter what I HEAR, it’s what I THINK. Even if God in His word did, in fact, establish capital punishment, I would first ask the Holy Spirit for myself whether capital punishment is right, as though the Holy Spirit would contradict God the Father. That’s like everyone being his own president. We hear what we think.
