Communicating the need to act can have unpredictable results.

During the first decade of this century, long before there were any efficiency experts, somebody came up with the bright idea of hanging up in the office signs that simply said, “Do It Now!” The president of a large business bought a number of those supposed cures against procrastination and hung them up in front of all his employees.

After a few days, he was startled at the results. The treasurer of the company had skipped out with $50,000. The head bookkeeper had eloped with the boss’s secretary. Three salesmen had asked for raises and the boy in the mail room had gone out west to become a movie producer.
