Author of the Rules Files For Divorce

Cheap Irony Of The Day — Author Of The Rules Files For Divorce

“It seems that The Rules authors Sherrie Schneider and Ellen Fein may have reached the end of the rainbow,” Bartholomew Roberts writes. “The two have made their money publishing books that advise women how to find a mate and have a happy marriage. The books have been bashed by feminists because of their decidedly ‘traditional’ advice. Now, shortly before the release of their third book, it turns out that co-author Ellen Fein is filing for divorce from her husband of 16 years. Not only this; but the divorce had actually been filed a year earlier and a mere three months after Fein signed a contract for a third book. As a result, Fein — who once told a competing author on a talk show, ‘We are on our first marriages, and you’re on your second’ — let the publisher send out pre-release copies of the book with glowing tributes to the author’s marital bliss.”

This is reminiscent of Audrey Kishline, the “Moderate Drinking” author and movement leader who ended up convicted of vehicular manslaughter after mowing down a man and his daughter while drunk driving. [see HolwickID #19431]

ELLEN FEIN GETTING A DIVORCE

NEW YORK: It seems some rules are made to be broken. Ellen Fein, co-author of the “Rules” books that teach women how to snag men by playing hard to get, is getting a divorce. The announcement comes just three months before the release of the third book in the series, which Fein again co-wrote with Sherrie Schneider. AOL Time Warner is expected to release “The Rules III: Time-Tested Secrets for Making Your Marriage Work,” in June 2001.

Fein, 43, has been married to pharmacist Paul Feingertz, 41, for more than 15 years, People magazine reported. The publisher will insert a paragraph into the new book’s introduction, stating that Fein and her husband are divorcing.

Schneider is still married.

There are more than 2 million copies in print of the original 1996 book, “The Rules: Time-Tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr Right.” That number dropped to 350,000 for the sequel, “The Rules II: More Rules to Live and Love By,” which came out in 1997. The third “Rules” book has a first printing of just 75,000 copies.

NEW YORK (AP) – Ellen Fein still plays by “The Rules,” even though she’s getting a divorce.

The co-author of the “Rules” books, which teach women to snag men by playing hard to get, is splitting up with her husband of 15 years, just as “The Rules III: Time-Tested Secrets for Making Your Marriage Work,” is hitting bookstores.

“I don’t think it ruins my credibility at all,” the 43-year-old Fein said during an interview on ABC’s “PrimeTime Thursday,” in which co-author Sherrie Schneider also appeared.

“I totally 100 percent believe in ‘The Rules,”‘ Fein said. “And I believe in ‘The Rules’ for marriage … and I did them all for many, many years.”

The original 1996 book, “The Rules: Time-Tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr. Right,” was a huge hit, with more than 2 million copies in print. The sequel, “The Rules II: More Rules to Live and Love By,” came out in 1997.

Schneider said: “Those who think that Ellen’s situation is going to be the end of ‘The Rules’ are going to be very disappointed because we have a gift for helping women with dating and marriage, and that is going to continue regardless of what happens in our personal lives.”

Ellen Fein made the announcement on the eve of her latest book Rules III – subtitled “Time-tested secrets for making your marriage work” – being released. Hundreds of advance copies have been sent out trumpeting the happy state of Ms. Fein’s marriage and that of her co-author, Sherri Schneider.

The publisher AOL Time Warner is now rushing out a new cover. The original said: “Ellen and Sherrie, two long-time married women themselves, know that just because you’ve married the man of your dreams doesn’t mean your work has ended; good marriages don’t happen by accident.” It contains a chapter on divorce that claims: “It is easier to stay married than get married.”

The original Rules, published in 1996, was a social phenomenon, earning the wrath of feminists. The book argued that modern women had to relearn the art of playing hard to get and suggested using egg-timers to limit conversations with suitors to 10 minutes.

Men should be put through a series of challenges to test both their gallantry and willingness to commit to a relationship. Women were advised to be neither too funny nor too clever, but to retain an air of mystery. Plastic surgery was suggested for those with unsightly noses.

The book’s popularity soared when it was reported that Princess Diana had read it. As the authors toured the talk shows, they boasted of their own happy marriages. They claimed that a woman who followed The Rules “will have one of those made-in-heaven marriages. A Rules marriage is forever”.

On the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996, Ms. Fein told a feminist critic whose first marriage had failed that, as a divorcee, she was in no position to pontificate.

In The Rules III, Ms. Fein and Ms. Schneider claim that for a marriage to succeed, women must be subservient to their husbands and not bother them with daily woes. They also recommend that wives grow their hair, as men find that more attractive.

Ms. Fein, 43, told her publishers earlier this year that she had filed for divorce from Paul Feingertz, a pharmacist to whom she had been married for 16 years, citing abandonment. She had hoped to rebuild her marriage.
