Unmarried, middle-aged men are twice as likely to die as those who have spouses. Living together doesn’t help, you have to be married. 23% of men ages 45-54 who lived without a spouse died within 10 years, compared with 11% of those who lived with their wives. Women are much happier single.

Marriage apparently breeds better living habits, with single men drinking and smoking more and eating less well.
