Server Or Servant?

Pastor Paul Chaya was dining in a restaurant in Pennsylvania when he noticed the shirt the waitress was wearing. The back of the shirt said, “I Am Your Server, Not Your Servant”. Undoubtedly she had taken a lot of abuse from impatient customers and she was trying to declare her dignity.

Should a Christian wear such a shirt? Certainly no Christian should want to be abused, but our calling is to do more than take orders and deliver some food. Just as Jesus wrapped himself in a towel and washed his disciples’ feet, so believers should serve others even if there is no gratitude or obvious benefit. We serve others because he first served us.
