CHURCH SAYS SERVICE NOT SO SUPER
By Dwight Perry, The Seattle Times
Turns out that the San Francisco 49ers, who pounded the Denver Broncos 55-10 in 1990, didn’t produce the biggest blowout in Super Bowl history after all.
No, that distinction now belongs to the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, whose members voted 67-10 this month to oust Rev. Stanley B. Hall Sr. Hall sparked a furor by scheduling a consecration service at the Birmingham, Ala., church that coincided with the kickoff of the NFL’s Jan. 26 title game.
Hall defrocked the six trustees and deacons who failed to attend the service. Church members, enraged, then voted overwhelmingly to boot Hall, who is trying to block his ouster in court.
“An even more shocking aspect of the deacons’ decision,” said Randy Turner of the Winnipeg Free Press , “Vegas had the church listed as (only) four-point favorites.”
