Alister McGrath’s “The Mystery of the Cross” says that God is not simply powerful in spite of the failure and humiliation of the cross, but God Himself makes His power known to us in and through the failure and humiliation of the cross. I’ve been reminded that the “foolishness of the cross” can only be reconciled with the wisdom of master’s programs in seminaries as Christians realize that we are not handling theological ideas, we are handled by a Person. The better I know God, the more I realize that the deepest and most profound mysteries of the Christian faith are focused in the cross, and the cross only. Life in Christ can be that basic, that simple.
